China has 55 ethnic minorities and they inhabit different areas in China. Each different minority has it’s own different culture. Every unique culture has its own charm and can attract visitors from all over the world. Here are some places that ICL would like to recommend to friends who are interested in cultural customs of minorities in China.
Qiandongnan
Qiandongnan Miao and the Dong Autonomous Prefecture are located in the southern-east area of Guizhou Province and on the edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Lots of Miao and Dong live in this area. Thus this area has very rich ethnic customs. Qiandognan has the largest Miao and Dong cottages in the world. There are special Diaojiao Building, Wind-Rain Bridges and Drum Towers in these cottages. Miao and Dong minorities are good at singing and dancin. Dong minority songs are famous all over the world. Miao and Dong also have many traditional crafts like embroidery, batik, silver jewelry and so on, these traditional art works are worth being added to your collection.
Xishuangbanna
Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture is the southernmost prefecture of Yunnan Province. It’s nickname is”Aerial Garden “ because of it’s beautiful animals and plants.. Xishuangbanna is rich in natural, historical and cultural resources, noted for its folklore, rain forests, rare plants and wildlife. From April 13 to 15, it is Dai’s well-known Water-Splashing Festival. Visitors can celebrate the festivals with the locals and they can see the most traditional Chinese minority culture. Besides the water festival event Xishuangbanna also consists of some other events such as Dragon boat races, firing of indigenous missiles and the flying of Kongming Lamps.
Tibet
Tibet lies on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of the southwest border of China. The average height of the whole region is more than 4000 meters above the sea level, so Tibet is also called “Roof of the World”. Although Tibet is a part of China, it has a unique culture of all their own. The main residents of Tibet are Tibetans. Tourist can see the old and mysterious culture and sacred Tibetan Buddhism in that region of China. Since Tibet has profound cultural connotations. It also has special natural plateau scenery. scenic spots like Namtso, Yamdrok Lake, and the deepest canyon in the world-Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon are all in Tibet area. The special geography constitution make the landscape special. Tibet is one of the most recommended destinations in China in our list.
